ATI Stream - Unleash the power of Video Encoding/Decoding and Playback

HIS Office, April 25, 2010

ATI Stream technology is a set of advanced hardware and software technologies that enable AMD graphics processors (GPU), working in concert with the system's central processor (CPU), to accelerate many applications beyond just graphics. This enables better balanced platforms capable of running demanding computing tasks faster than ever.

Consumers now enjoy video content on their desktops and mobile devices like laptop and smartphone. High-Definition (HD) video recording and editing has made its way into mainstream application. In order to edit and convert video with relatively reasonable speed, end-users needed a PC with high-end PC configuration which is expensive....until the coming of ATI Stream Technology.

GPU Video Encoding

Consumers are now able to convert their video files leveraging their Radeon GPU computing power. Simply put, with Radeon GPU and applications specially built to take advantage of the GPU, you are now able to tap into the massive amounts of parallel compute power.

What it usually takes 3-4 hours of video encoding, can now be speed up by up to 100%. We are seeing upwards of 75% faster conversion times with GPGPU transcoding enabled versus standard CPU enabled transcoding. Simply put, ATI Stream leverages all the processing resources, both CPU and GPU for a fast transcoding, which keeping the PC responsive to ensure a good user experience. No more CPU usage hitting 100% during video conversion.

Below is an example of how ATI Stream speed up the video decoding in Cyberlink MediaShow Espresso:

Video Playback

Standard DVD playback can output video signal at a resolution of 720x480. With the advent of high definition (HD) TV and monitors, video upscaling is utilized to enable a better viewing experience of DVD and non-HD content.

ArcSoft will enable a consumer to take advantage of their Radeon GPU for the DVD upscaling processing. As video below showcase, the image on the left is near HD quality which is crystal clear and very vibrant. The image on the right is standard definition is kinda boring. With ATI Stream technology, DVD upscaling is done in real-time and accelerated by the Radeon GPU. The result is taking a 480i/p video and processing it to HD definition of 720p or even 1080i, all done in real time.
